if someone snores LOUDLY what medically can they do about it?
First it is important to differentiate simple snoring from obstructive
sleep apnea. Does the patient stop breathing regularly during the
night and awake with a snort? Are they always tired during the day?
If so, they need to see a sleep disorders specialist because they may
have a life-threatening disorder.
Otherwise, there are some simple things to try that may be helpful. The
patient should not drink any alcohol in the evening. If he snores only
on his back, put a tennis ball in a baggie and safety-pin it to the back
of his pajamas so he gets the tennis ball between the shoulder blades if
he rolls on his back. There are commercial snore pillows awailable from
hospi. |
| Ive been nearly convinced for a few months that my husband suffers from
this, but reading your post has pushed me over the edge. Last night, I got
roughly two hours of sleep due to his snoring, thrashing, sweating, and
gasping for air. I lay next to him and in the span of twenty minutes
counted him stop breathing eighteen times. This is the scenario: three or
four normal breaths (normal meaning incredibly loud
snoring/snorting/sounding like a drowning ox) followed by nothing....no
sound, no noise, no movement. Then, an incredible rush of air that hes
gasping for while thrashing his legs around and twitching. |

| Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops briefly and repeatedly
during sleep. The breathing abnormality often causes snoring and frequent
awakening as the sleeper quickly gasps for breath. It can lead to drowsiness
during the day. Sleep apnea is recognized as a contributor to heart disease and
stroke. |
